Volunteer Coordinator
Reports to: Executive Director
Position Summary
The Literacy Coordinator manages the STAR Literacy Volunteer Adult Tutor Program, including program delivery, learner and volunteer support, community outreach, reporting, grant writing, and budget monitoring.

- Ability to maintain accurate records and handle confidential information.
- Experience with program coordination, reporting, or administration is an asset.
- Ability to build positive relationships with learners, volunteers, staff, and community partners.
- Flexible and willing to support other programs and office tasks when needed.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Program Management
- Plan, coordinate, and evaluate the STAR Literacy program.
- Ensure the program meets CALP requirements and Government of Alberta reporting requirements.
- Maintain accurate learner, volunteer, program, and financial records.
- Prepare monthly reports for the Executive Director and Board and quarterly reports for the Literacy Advisory Committee.
- Identify funding opportunities and prepare project proposals.
- Maintain program resources, files, and materials.
- Participate in professional development and literacy-related events.
- Assist with program and community events.
2. Learner Support and Program Delivery
- Meet with prospective learners to assess their literacy, numeracy, and/or English language needs.
- Help learners set goals and monitor their progress.
- Match learners with appropriate volunteer tutors and provide ongoing support.
- Provide tutors with learner information, resources, and strategies.
- Maintain accurate learner records and complete annual assessments.
- Organize learning activities, groups, and Conversation Circles
- Volunteer and Tutor Management
- Recruit, screen, train, and support volunteer tutors.
- Match tutors with learners and monitor tutor-learner relationships.
- Provide ongoing communication, resources, and support to tutors.
- Maintain accurate volunteer records and hours.
- Recognize and encourage volunteer participation.
4. Community Outreach and Partnerships
- Build and maintain relationships with community agencies, organizations, and partners.
- Promote STAR Literacy through community outreach, events, social media, newsletters, and other communication channels.
- Identify partnership opportunities that support learners and program development.
- Represent STAR Literacy and St. Albert Further Education in the community.
5. General Responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality and follow organizational policies and procedures.
- Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, learners, community partners, and the Board.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
6. Flexible Organizational Support
- The Volunteer Coordinator may be asked to support other administrative or program-related tasks within St. Albert Further Education as needed.
- Provide temporary coverage for staff who are away due to vacation, sick leave, or other absences.
- Assist with general office duties and support other programs when required.
Position Details:
Employment Type: Part-time / Flexible
Hours: Flexible, based on program and organizational needs
Location: Different locations.This is not a full-time position. The successful candidate will have flexibility in scheduling and work location, while being available to support the organization’s programs and operational needs.
